macOS Microphone and Webcam Troubleshooting

Problem

This article walks you through the steps to check your microphone & webcam and make sure they are both working properly in the macOS.

Quick Take: The virtual deposition platform requires a microphone & webcam in order for you to join the deposition. Without the proper hardware, you cannot access the platform.

Solution

Follow the steps below to ensure that Mac can access your microphone and webcam.

Microphone

  1. Navigate to your ‘System Preferences’ application as this contains all of your settings.
This is the gray, gears icon shown below:

  2. Select the “Sound” option listed within the settings menu

  3. Click the ‘Input’ tab

    1. Select a device for sound input, by clicking on each of the names listed. Once the device is highlighted check for activity on the ‘Input level’ test bar, which is located below the ‘Settings for the selected device’ section

      1. If there are multiple devices listed, continue to check the ‘Input level’ test bar for each until one of the devices responds

      2. If none of the devices show activity, then you may have a faulty device. The microphone must work on macOS in order for the virtual deposition platform to access the microphone and output your audio

Camera

  1. Navigate to your ‘Finder’ application. This is the square, blue and gray, smiling face icon shown below:

  2. Select the “Applications” tab within the left-hand column

  3. Type “FaceTime” in the search bar located in the top-right corner and click “FaceTime”

  4. Once the FaceTime application is open, the video feed should be visible

    1. If you receive an error or the video does not display then you may have a faulty webcam

      1. The webcam must work in the default macOS FaceTime application in order for the virtual deposition platform to access the webcam and display your video feed

After confirming your macOS microphone and camera settings, proceed by checking Google Chrome settings for further troubleshooting Google Chrome's Camera & Microphone Settings.
