Windows 10 Microphone & Webcam Troubleshooting

Problem

This article walks you through the steps to test your microphone & webcam to ensure they are both functioning properly within the Windows 10 operating system.

Quick Take: The virtual deposition platform requires a microphone & webcam in order for you to join and participate in the deposition. Without the proper hardware, you cannot access the platform.

Solution

You’ll need to ensure Windows 10 can access your Microphone & Camera.

Microphone

  1. Right-click on the speaker icon down by the clock in the bottom-right of the screen

  2. Choose “Open Sound Settings” from the pop-up menu

  3. This will bring you to the input and output screen in the Sound Settings. Check to make sure your speakers and microphone are correctly selected in the drop-down menus

  4. When speaking, the ‘Microphone Test’ bar should bounce with the activity if it is functioning properly

    1. If the test bar does not move while you speak check the “Input” drop-down menu for alternative devices. Proceed with testing the available options until you find the correct device

    2. If none of the options work, you may have a faulty device. The microphone must work in Windows 10 in order for the platform to access the microphone and output your audio

Camera

  1. Open the Windows 10 Start Menu and type “Camera” into the search bar

    1. If the search bar does not appear after opening the Windows 10 Start Menu, simply start typing “Camera”. This generates the search bar to appear and will reflect the exact same pop-up screen

  2. Select the Camera App once it appears in the search results

  3. Once the Camera App opens you should see the video feed. If you get an error or the video does not display then you may have a faulty webcam

    1. The camera must function in the default Windows 10 Camera App in order for the virtual deposition platform to display your video feed

After confirming your Windows 10 microphone and camera settings, proceed by checking Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge settings for further troubleshooting Google Chrome's Camera & Microphone Settings and Microsoft Edge's Camera & Microphone Settings
